University of Chicago Medicine and Biological Sciences

The bar was set high for The Facilities, Planning, Design and Construction department in FY16. In addition to the work to complete the University of Chicago Medicine’s key construction and development projects, the department was responsible for managing more than 200 projects across the medical and university campuses.

This was a huge undertaking. The team banded together and took this challenge head on, working countless hours to ensure we not only meet but exceed the expectations of organizational stakeholders. I want to thank my team for their continued commitment and dedication, assisting the Medical Center to expand its footprint across Illinois.

Several key projects were successfully completed in FY2016 including the Heart and Vascular Imaging Center, the Oncology Infusion Therapy Center, and the Post-Partum Suite in Mitchell. These areas are now serving patients in new, state-of-the-art facilities that are more efficient and patient-centric.

FY2017 is off to a great start. We are on target to bring several major projects on-line by the end of the year. These projects include: TW150 EP Lab, The Family Birth Center, CCD 3 and 4, CCD Kitchen and the Center for Advanced Care at Orland Park. These projects are vital to UChicago Medicine’s growth and sustainability plan. The project management teams are working in overdrive to ensure their successful completion.

In addition, we have brought on four new associates who will assist the department in its efforts to provide excellence in program and project management. Please welcome:

·         Stephanie Stanton, Project Manager

·         Joel Van Essen, Strategic Program Manager

·         Matthew Kohut, Project Manager

·         Melina Ortiz, Facilities Planner

I am also excited to announce the promotion of four team members who have demonstrated their commitment to the work of this organization. Please congratulate the following team members:

·         Herbert Wilson, Assistant Director of Program Management – BSD

·         Mike Parr, Senior Project Manager

·         Nick Siorek, Senior Project Manager

·         Emma Coleman, Assistant Project Manager

On July 15, Senior Project Manager George Kasang retired after dedicating more than 17 years of service to the department. During his tenure, he has worked on diverse projects from animal facilities and basic research labs to cancer treatment and clinical facilities. KaSang was the driving force in the design and construction of the Knapp Center for Biomedical Discovery. His final project was the third and fourth floor build-out of the Center for Care and Discovery. The department offers our sincerest congratulations to George on a long and outstanding career.  We wish him well in his next stage in life.

Thank you for your contributions to the entire organization. I am looking forward to another great year!

All the best,

P.S. The department will participate in the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk on Friday, September 30. This is a huge philanthropic commitment for UChicago Medicine and we are getting in gear to put our best foot forward. Doug Daudell is our team captain on this charge. He did a great job last year, and I know he can do it again.
