University of Chicago Medicine and Biological Sciences

Fall has descended upon the medical campus, a sure sign that things are slowing down. For the Facilities, Planning, Design and Construction team, it is the exact opposite – our work is moving as rapidly as ever.

We have made great strides in the recent months to ensure that key construction projects are completed on time and are built to the Medical Center’s standards when providing world-class patient care. Recently, we have completed numerous projects including the third and fourth floors of the Center for Care and Discovery and the Family Birth Center.

We also broke ground on the adult emergency department that will increase access to care for South Side residents. This project, along with the dedicated cancer hospital, is a part of the University of Chicago Medicine’s Get CARE plan. The project teams are working with organizational stakeholders to begin the work that will serve as the foundation for the next phases of the plan.

In addition, here is an update on the other projects that we will be bringing on-line in next few months:

Center for Care and Discovery Kitchen: The new kitchen will more than double in size – from 5,500-square-feet to 12,200-square-feet – providing dining services for approximately 200 patients who were recently relocated from Mitchell to the CCD. The final phases of construction are almost complete. The enhanced space will open in November.

Center for Advanced Care at Orland Park: Our largest off-site ambulatory medical facility will open its doors in December. Final phases of construction are underway.

Center for Advanced Care at South Loop: Construction at Southgate Market, located at 1101 S. Canal Street, Chicago, began in September. It will take more than three months to complete construction of the space and additional time to ensure the space is ready for patients. It is our goal to occupy the space in February 2017.

Thank you to all of our internal and external partners who have diligently worked side-by-side with us to complete these projects. It is certainly a team effort ,and we are looking forward to continuing our partnerships to ensure the projects’ success.

Sincerely,

Marco Capicchioni

P.S. See you guys on Friday, September 30 at Soldier Field for the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk!
