Two New Major Construction Projects to Debut in August
The University of Chicago Medicine is diligently working to onboard two new major construction projects in August:
August 14: The third and fourth floor of the Center for Care and Discovery
More than 250 patients will be moving from Mitchell Hospital to the third and fourth floors of the Center for Care and Discovery. To prepare to move patients onto more than 200,000-square-feet of space, teams from various clinical and support departments have been meeting regularly to construct and execute a plan, working very closely to ensure a smooth transition for patients.
Each floor will have 105 patient beds, comprised of intensive care, medical-surgical, 24-hour observation and isolation beds. The third floor of the will house the burn center and acute dialysis unit. The fourth floor will be set to accommodate heart and vascular inpatient services.
The renovation of these floors will complete UChicago Medicine’s “hospital of the future.”
August 29: New labor and delivery unit, Family Birth Center
Move preparations are underway to open the Family Birth Center’s new and improved Labor and Delivery Unit. Located on the third floor of the Comer Children’s Hospital, expectant and new mothers and their babies will have expanded access to high-quality obstetric and pediatrics services.
The 25,000-square-foot unit will provide immediate access to the neonatal intensive care unit for high-risk expectant mothers and infants. UChicago Medicine is the South Side’s only Level 3 perinatal provider and referral center, treating women who have had little to no prenatal care and experience complicated deliveries.
These projects will assist in UChicago Medicine’s quest to provide high-quality care in state-art-of-the-art facilities on the South Side of Chicago and beyond.
