University of Chicago Medicine and Biological Sciences

On September 19, the University of Chicago Medicine opened the doors to care for expectant mothers and their babies in the all-new Family Birth Center. The 25,000-square-foot facility, located on the third floor of Comer Children’s Hospital, will provide customizable traditional and natural child birth options to create the most optimal birthing experience, supported by the best obstetric and pediatric experts.

Elements of the space for expectant mothers include nine private delivery suites that were designed specifically so women could give birth in a nurturing, pleasant and supportive environment with their families present.

In addition, there are five triage rooms, five antepartum rooms, two operating rooms (C-section suites), two recovery rooms and two natural birth rooms complete with built-in warm water immersion tubs.

After birth, new mothers recover in soft and warm-hued spacious private suites in the new Family Birth Center's Mother and Baby Unit, which opened in February. Located on the third floor of Mitchell, the 21,000-square-foot-unit provides a state-of-the-art setting for mothers to heal while bonding with and nurturing their newborns.

In both the units, expectant and new mothers will have access to the GetWellNetwork, an interactive learning tool shown on in-room televisions that is designed to empower patients to participate in their care.

Prior the opening of the space, more than 400 UChicago Medicine faculty and staff attended a ribbon cutting ceremony. During the event, staff participated in self-guided tours to learn more about the features of the rooms and how they were created to simplify the work of the staff while maximizing the patient experience.
