When the Family Birth Center (FBC) opens August 29, it will be the premier facility providing expectant mothers and their babies the best obstetric and pediatrics care on Chicago’s South Side. Located on the third floor of Comer Children’s Hospital, in the heart of the University of Chicago Medicine’s Hyde Park campus, the FBC will provide mothers with numerous child birthing options, allowing them to create a personalized experience. The Medical Center has been hard at work preparing for the new addition to its family.

Preparations are underway to open the Family Birth Center’s new and improved Labor and Delivery Unit. Recently, UChicago Medicine held its first Day in the Life event to identify facility issues, test equipment and systems, and practice workflow processes in the departments. Coordinated by HTS Consultants, the ten-hour event included 63 participants from various clinical departments.

“Staff were very engaged and played a critical role during this process,” said Kate Jones, Executive Director of Women’s Care Services. “Their feedback ensures that we are maximizing opportunities to provide an efficient and safe environment for staff and patients.”

The 25,000-square-foot unit will contain: nine labor/delivery/recovery rooms, five triage rooms, five antepartum rooms, two operating rooms (C-section suites), two recovery rooms and two natural birth rooms.

The FBC will also be in close proximity to to the neonatal intensive care unit, located on the second and fourth floors of Comer, for high-risk expectant mothers and infants. UChicago Medicine is the South Side’s only Level 3 perinatal provider and referral center, treating women who have had little to no prenatal care and experience complicated deliveries.

UChicago Medicine employees will have an opportunity to tour the space before its debut during a series of open houses: August 11 – 6 to 8 a.m.; August 12 – 1 to 3 p.m.; August 16 – 10 to 12 p.m.; and August 18 – 8 to 10 p.m.

UChicago Medicine also launched the new FBC website, uchospitals.edu/birth-center, featuring birth stories, care team profiles and a patient/visitor guide.
