University of Chicago Medicine and Biological Sciences

From now until mid-November, the City of Chicago will be doing additional construction to install a new water main below the street between the hospital and university campuses. As a result, Ellis Avenue, between 57th and 59th street, will be limited to southbound traffic only. The impacted area is shown on the attached drawing above (highlighted in yellow).

The sidewalks on the east side of the street will also be closed and parking will be restricted on both sides of the street until construction wraps up in November.

Bus routes on the street will be unaffected. In addition, all medical center parking facilities and valet parking services are available.

Furthermore, every effort is being taken to avoid any major issues. Water interruptions to some buildings along Ellis Avenue have been identified as part of the work.  Physical Plant is working on temporary water feeds to these buildings to avoid any loss of service.

The Facilities planning, design and construction department is working with the University of Chicago along with city officials and contractors to devise a plan to avoid any potential re-occurrence of the events that resulted in the "boil water" notice in late August.
